Eat Me. Botherambo, Richmond

I’m so pleased to see that there are SO many restaurants already on my wishlist here in Melbourne. Between new openings, pop-ups and staple venues; I’ve got a list as long as my arm to try.

Richmond is a great spot that has surprised me with its offering. Last week, my ballet-dancer-extraordinaire friend was in town so we headed for Swan Street to Botherambo.

Tucked away on a corner right near the railway bridge, this restaurant is unassuming from the street but once you step inside you’re hit with the personality of the place. Think Asian-fusion cuisine with botanical design elements to create a dining-in-the-chic-jungle atmosphere. Totally cool.

We pulled up a chair and set about the difficult task of choosing a cocktail – seriously they all sounded amazing. In the end I went for the White Lies; blending pineapple rum, lychee, lemon and soda for a truly tropical experience.

Next, the food. Asian cuisine is pretty much my favourite, I think it’s even overtaken Italian in my estimations, so this menu had PLENTY of appeal. From crab to tuna to chilli beef and Murray cod. It all sounds so good.

We started with the cured hiramasa kingfish served with radish, coconut and chilli oil. Light, refreshing and the perfect way to start a meal.

Next, we upped the ante with the fried spiced squid. You simply must get this. It’s so tasty and seriously moreish. We had to refrain from ordering another portion. Got to think of the summer waistline.

Then, the main event. The red duck curry with sweet potato. Can I just say, wow. Served with coconut rice and Chinese broccoli, this ensemble reached new flavour levels. I wish I could make a curry as flavoursome as this. If I ever master it, I’ll be sure to share the recipe.

Melbournites, get on down to this hotspot before it gets overrun. The food is top-notch and I don’t think I even need to explain about the cocktails.
