Eat Me. Meletos, Yarra Valley

I tell you what, I'll travel a long way for heavenly food. The kind of perfect meal that you just can't help but tell all your friends about over and over again.

I got exactly that on my visit to the Yarra Valley. Where I hear you asking? At Meletos.

Tucked away in the vineyards off the Maroondah Highway you'll find this magical little cafe. It's pretty much as close as you'll get to eating in a grand farm barn, like the kind you see in movies. A big pitched ceiling awaits you with floor to ceiling windows and the gentle hum of happy diners.

We pulled up a chair with a lovely view of the vines and feasted our eyes on the lunch menu. The waiters bustled back and forth and I must say they are a friendly lot - all smiles. After a good natter about the local area we sat back, relaxed and waited with grumbling tummies.

Now, can I just preface this first dish by saying it's probably up there in my top 10 favourite dishes I've ever eaten. It was positively orgasmic. Goats curd with truffle honey and grilled bread. So much more than the sum of its parts. I could rave about it all day but I'm sure you get the idea. Just go there and order it.

While we were still gushing over the cheese our next dishes arrived. Wood-fired pizza with prosciutto and artichokes, and a rocket and pear salad. Truly it was the most delightful lunch I've had... virtually ever.

After we ate we took a stroll outside among the grounds which are so beautiful. Next time you're in this neck of the woods be sure to stop by for lunch, a trip to the Yarra Valley simply wouldn't be complete without lunch at Meletos. But a word to the wise, come early or late (avoiding 1-2pm), or expect to wait an hour for a table.
