Eat Me. Yagiz, South Yarra

One place I really wish I'd had the opportunity to visit whilst living in Europe is Turkey. Sadly, what with the current world affairs, I never made it over the Aegean Sea to see it. I can however say that I had the opportunity to try some incredible Turkish food whilst living abroad, but I'm sure not as good as the real thing. Although I must say, this new Turkish restaurant in South Yarra comes pretty close. Welcome to Yagiz...

Recently opened on Toorak Road, near the corner of Punt, Yagiz has a veritable sense of sophistication from the moment you walk in the door. The decor combines Turkish elements with an industrial influence; from embroidered cushions to besser blocks, indoor plants to polished timber. It has quite the alluring affect.

But although lovely, it wasn't the decor we came for, it was the food [and the cocktails, ahem]. The drinks list is extensive with a wonderful selection of wines and a mouth-watering cocktail list. We opted for the Turkish Delight; pretty in pink, and the Hanging Gardens; a gin, elderflower and cucumber combo making it a great summer option.

The food menu offers a refined take on traditional Turkish cuisine. Think of a Turkish mumma with world-class training and you'll kind of get the effect. Designed to share, you can choose from snacks, entrees and mains ranging from fava bean parfait to lamb rack.

As the mercury was broaching 35 degrees Celsius on the day we visited, we opted for some light, fresh dishes like the stuffed calamari with ink.

And the pickled seam bream with a fresh ceviche feeling.

Of course we couldn't leave without tasting dessert - who do you take us for? On a hot summer's day I think you'll find the Gullac is a smart choice - rose milk pastry, gin berries and blood orange granita make for a fresh, zingy combination.

There’s so much choice when it comes to dining in South Yarra, new restaurants tend to pop up overnight like mushrooms. Finding the best new dinner spots all over town is a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it. Book your own visit to Yagiz here.
